If they want to fit a new cat for free under warranty then I say let them. It'll be an additional 3 years before your car needs a replacement cat.

I can't think of any fault that can happen to a cat that would make the car unsafe to drive, you'll might have horrible emissions and worse fuel consumption and probably wouldn't pass the MOT emissions check, but you wont do any damage.

Because they may not tell the truth. I only had a 3 month warranty which would be up before they even got the part. I cant see them telling me the truth and what if it causes damage further down the line.

I would rather hear from the supplying dealer - and get it in writing that its ok to drive the car - rather than take someones word off a forum?

That way if further damage is caused, you have had the dealers instructions that its ok to drive.

Herein lies another problem. Ask a dealer to tell you something, and getting it in writing are two different things (mostly because they're worried about litigation).

That is my worry. I will ask for it in writing and will let you know.

Do i have any right to return the car. It is under finance. I have made 2 payments so far. I dont want a car thats going to have problems that take months to fix?

Reject it under the sales of goods act. A nearly new car which takes 8 weeks to repair is not fit for purpose.

Are you able to provide any references for this info?

Rubbish. Its still perfectly usable, it merely has higher emissions than it would otherwise have. And if it needs a new CAT or LAmbda sensor and only has a 3 month warranty, its not that new.
