bizzare behaviour from barclaycard

in Credit cards
Is this normal? I had agreed with barclaycard a rate of 11.9% after they tried to put my rate up a few years ago (I've had a card with them 13 years, always paid off at least the minimum payment, never gone over my limit) and then they sneakily put it up recently to 16.9% (they say they sent me a letter but I never saw it).
Anyways I phoned up to have a chat, and said i was not happy and was thinking about cancelling my card (note the 'thinking of') hoping to be put through to the retention team and agree to go back to my previous rate.
They said someone from the retention team would call me but no one ever did.
Now my card has been cancelled!
Luckily I've managed to get a bal tran to a 0% for a year virgin card, so it's bye bye barclaycard, but is this in any way the kind of behaviour to expect from them? If i had not been able to get the balance transfer to a new card I'd be stuck without a paddle as can't afford to pay off the balance of 2.5k .
It just doesn't seem like good business sense on their part not to try and offer me some sort of deal to keep me, and I feel a little 'cast aside' by them after I've had a card with them for 13 years! Plus of course I never actually told them to cancel the card I just said I was considering it
Not that I'm taking it personally of course!!

You can close a credit card acoount with a balance on it and as long as you pay it off in what the provider deem as a reasonable ammount of time it is ok.0

Sure, but I am slightly concerned that they closed the account before I said I wanted to do this. I only said I was considering it, they said someone would call me to discuss they then close the account without telling me I only found out when I tried to buy something on the card and the transaction was declined0

I would say that your "bluff" was well and truly called!
Time to move on now, methinks!

yeah well it's me who has the last laugh:rotfl:as I probably would have stayed with barclaycard if they'd just put my rate back down like last time. As it is I have a much better deal now with Virgin so barclaycard are the ones who have lost out!0

It's nice to see that the calling off the bluff didn't pay off in their favour, but it's never nice to have your bluff called, glad to hear that you had the fall back plan too!If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.0 -
Barclaycard have lost another customer so the bluff called was on them.bigbloke45 wrote: »I would say that your "bluff" was well and truly called!

See it from their point of view though, they've got your money back, now it's Virgin's problem. Sometimes I suspect they look at accounts, see how they're being managed and think they'd rather just have the cash back thank you very much. So it's not really a bluff against them as they decided to close the account anyway.0
