Want to work out average bills for new flat

Just trying to work out a budget for my bills, I was just wondering if people in a similar situation could help me work out some costs for water/elec/gas etc... so i can work out a more accurate budget.

Currently living with one other person.

We both have a shower at least once and sometimes three times a day.

Average kettle use.

Use an electric oven, but often forget to turn it off (one time it ran for almost 24 hours)

We clean sporadically and often in bursts (once all the dishes are dirty)

Quite often we'll have 1-4 guests and at least 2 times a month will have a party with 20+ people.

We leave the lights on when we leave the house so its not all gloomy when we come home.

Big plasma TV, sky, xbox, PS3...we tend to leave them on so we don't miss our save points etc..

Both of us are out of the house during the day.

I leave my laptop on, often playing music through the sound-system so there's some nice jazz tunes floating around when I get in, also it keeps the neighbours happy.

Sometimes we'll do a film marathon (last one was all the James Bond's which took 72 hours) so the TV and PS3 we're on constantly for this time.

I quite often fall asleep on the sofa while watching TV (face-down) one time I woke up and had my hand in a half eaten can of tuna, which I obviously wasn't happy about.

Thanks in advance for your help team!

It's difficult to say with any accurancy, but if you budget say £200 a month for electric & gas (half it if you decide to turn off the appliances when not in use) you shouldn't go too far wrong, especially if you keep an eye on your consumption and perhaps use imeasure.org.uk to keep control.

Water will depend on whether or not you are on a meter.

    Hey thats a great idea!

I've been feeling stressed recently, due to utilities bills. I think I could go for this water fountain idea. I think I'll fill a bath, then take out the plug and turn the shower on. That way there will be perpetual fresh water.

I could sit in the bathroom and listen to the TV from there (volume way up of course) and maybe read a nice book on my Kindle.

Tongue in cheek, made in response to this thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2721003

It just seemed silly to be over-thinking budgeting like this. You use the amount of water/gas/leccy that you need, I doubt many people will compromise their own enjoyment of their homes outside of common sense changes like energy saving bulbs etc.. for the sake of £3.98 a month.
  • i don't really get what point your trying to make but if you entertained yourself for a while then well done
