Help with clothing thats faulty

Can someone please help.

I bought a pair of tracksuit bottoms for my son from JD sports. They were £30 paid in cash. They were washed once and have an orange tinge to the fabric.Being light grey this shows up quite bad. I returned them to the store 2 weeks after purchase, due to distant issues and they said all they can do is send them to head office. Which i agreed too. Ive heard back today and they said ive not followed the correct washing instructions !! Which i am 100 % sure i did. ( I used to be a garment technologist,so know these are put on garments for reasons) After 2 phone calls today i am so cross. They have been returned back to the store ( which is 80 miles from my home) and not to me. So i have to collect them. Take them home and package them up to send them to customer services for a second inspection. They were very rude and told me that they have been inspected visually and have been washed incorrectly. The customer service man would not get someone to call me back to tell me how a visual inspection had been carried out. Eventually he said under artificial light. Which i am sure he isnt qualified to say,but thats by the by. All he kept saying was i have answered your question,if you dont like it you can contact trading standards or send it back for a second inspection. He was not interested that my contract was with JD store and so it was their responsibility to help me.. I also reminded him that surely customer services were there to help the customer.

Is there anyone who can advise me of my next move ? Im lost as what to do next.

Thankyou in advance

  • I doubt it was artificial light (anymore than a lightbulb anyway), to be honest. Having done the same stuff for a different retailer it is literally a visual inspection and check to see if there have been other problems with the same items. A Tape measure can be used if you were alledging they had shurnk, but you're not so its a moot point. What exactly have you done wrong in washing them that has caused a coulour tinge? Never heard of that from washing too hot. Are they saying that they have been washed with something orange?
  • The only thing that they said was that we hadnt followed the washing instructions correctly. Talking to customer services was abit like tooth extraction. lol.
I just honestly have no idea what to do next. As i say they have said i can return and they will reinspect. But i cant see what i would gain from returning them. Apart from a further bill from Royal Mail.

It does seem unlikely that grey fabric would spontaneously turn orange during washing - are you sure that there were no other clothes/items in the machine which could have leaked dye (once had a similar issue washing something with tags inside that I hadn't noticed)? Have they proffered an explanation as to how incorrect washing could have caused it them to go orange. Whilst it's the retailer's responsibility to prove that an item isn't faulty within six months of purchase, if they are claiming that the damage is caused by you, it might be that the only way you can prove the point is to pay an expert for an independent report, although whether they would be able to categorically state that an item HADN'T been washed incorrectly is another matter...
  • If they are stating that the item has been washed incorrectly they should be able to offer the reasons that have caused them to reach this conclusion.

For instance, if you have a woolen item that says wash at 30 degrees and dry flat it is possible to suggest that it has shrunk because it has been washed too hot, or stretched because it has been hung up to dry while soaking wet and the weight has caused stretching. It would be ineteresting to know exactly what they felt was done wrong in the washing process.
  • I will call them again in the morning and see what they say. But unfortunately they just repeat in parrot fashion that it was a visual inspection and its been washed incorrectly. Or should i say thats all that they would say last time. At this stage though i am willing to try anything.
