Extended Warranty

I would not normally even consider buying an extended warranty for anything, however, on this occasion I'm tempted.

Coming up for three years ago I had a (very expensive) moment of madness and bought a new car. Sadly, I've had nothing but trouble with it - a long line of faults, luckily all covered by the warranty. Some of them were fixed first time by the dealer, others took several visits, some are still unresolved.

The warranty runs out at the end of this month, and I'm having a bit of a panic. I was told that the work on my last visit alone would have cost £600+, had it not been covered by the warranty. That was two weeks ago, and today, the car is back in the garage with the same fault.

The manufacturer (VW) have quoted me £373 for a year's unlimited mileage, all factory fitted mechanical and electrical components, warranty. Which, given the number of faults I've had with this car seems too good to be true.

Being of cynical nature, I generally think that if something seems too good to be true, it usually is too good to be true. So, what's the catch?

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

  • Of course you were told the repairs were expensive, they know your warranty's about to expire and they want you to sign up for a new one. That's how they generate profit.

Personally I'd tell them that this is the last VW you'll ever buy, that they can shove their warranty, and that if it breaks again you'll sell it and buy from elsewhere. But that's just me.

Believe me, I have told them on numerous occasions that this is the last VW I'll ever buy.

Interestingly, the dealer aren't interested in selling me an extended warranty (presumably they realise how much hassle they'll have going forward). The offer is from VW themselves.

If it's a genuine manufacturer's warranty I'd buy it at that price.

Some dealers resell third party warranties and don't make it too clear that it isn't manufacturer backed. I would advise against any warranty that only covers parts specifically included in a list.

The letter came on VW letterhead with "Approved Warranty" at the top.

But at the bottom it says "the insurance product is provided by Mondial Assistance (UK) Ltd" "Mondial Assistance (UK) Limited, trading as Volkswagen Approved Warranty Administration Services".

Any idea if that makes it a genuine manufacturer's warranty or not???

Go to the dealer and try an negotiate the price. There's always some wriggle room with the manufacturer extended warranties.

The dealer are just giving me the run around. Frankly I think they're sick of me and the car, and the last thing they want is to give me a warranty which means I'll continue coming through their door everytime something goes wrong.
