Taking out a loan and then emigrating?

My sister is a fantastic nurse and worked hard for her degree. Unfortunately working in the UK as a nurse is a horrible job, whereas Australia is much more pleasant, less patients, better pay etc.
I'm sure she is, didn't mean to come accross that she isn't. Just commenting on bad nurses in the UK in general.
And, I don't blame her for wanting to leave. My friend is doing the same thing. Her and her OH are going out there next month for 18 months and will probably do some travelling around Asia too.
But, they have saved very hard for the last 2 years so that they could have 10k behind them before they left. Does your sister have to leave so soon? Can she not postpone it? I know it's not ideal, but it would put her in a much better position financially.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
They will take it out of her salary in Australia, she should be clearing her debts then going to australia, no point in getting a black mark against your name when you are starting a new life.0

I know someone doing something similar involving the Halifax/Lloyds group....
The thing that really irks me about it is I have been with them for years with a well managed current account, have a good well paid job, a spotlesss credit record (checked), even the mortgage on my home is with them with substantial equity in it....
will they give me one of their new clarity reward cards so I can save on holiday spending and manage everything online in one place, even with a small credit limit? -no
Will they give my 'already handed in notice and booked flights' friend who's been in the country less than 2 years and about to do a permanent runner on them to Brazii one of their new clarity reward cards with a silly credit limit for him to run up -yup no problem.
.....I'm fuming but suppose they'll get their just desserts in the end.:A0 -

I don't agree with her plans, but I can understand why she thinks it would be a good idea. I don't know if they will agree to a reduced payment, or if they'll laugh in her face, but all I want is for her not to get into trouble and ruin things.
But it's NOT a good idea if it means that she gets her visa revoked. Australia immigration will have no qualms about doing that, make no mistake. I lived there for a while, and I plan to emigrate permanently. Their visa rules are incredibly strict, and if they find deliberate intention to defraud through tax, debt, undeclared foreign income etc, it's not just her credit rating ruined (which , fair enough, your sister might not care about), it's that it will get reported to the ATO who will see she's on a visa, and report it to immigration who may kick her out. She might not care that she has to repay her debt through an attachment of earnings; she might not care that she has a mark against her re debt. But I'm sure she'd care if she got a knock on the door from Border Security, telling her she's broken her visa restrictions and will be removed from the country in 2 hours.
I LOVE Australia, I love the culture, love the people. Can't wait to be there full time. And because I love it so much and want it to be my life, I would never - in a million years - risk not complying with the very complex visa regulations as it means never being able to go back to live. And being banned for three years. Aus are really cracking down on immigration (having just decided not to process all the remaining pre-2007 applicants and cutting the skills list by nearly two thirds).
That's what seems so silly to me - losing a dream for a few thousand pounds. Not worth it IMO.
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -

This is exactly why I am trying to tell her the consequences.. it just isn't worth it at all..
Euronorris - you have been really helpful, it was some of the other posters that upset me a little..9/70lbs to lose0 -
OP, I don't think anyone has meant any offence, but it naturally causes a lot of anger knowing that someone is actually setting out to not pay back what they owe.
I'm on a DMP living really frugally paying back as much as I can every month till what seems like forever - certainly another 5 years (on top of the last 5!) but I ran the debt up, I have to pay it back - it was never MY money.
It seems like a kick in the teeth to my way of life (and life for many others too), and must be the same for those who have never got into difficulty and just plain worked hard and paid for everything too.
Although I don't know your sister, it feels a little personal for me because of this, maybe others feel the same? But I certainly am sure none of us on this thread wanted to upset you.
best,
pippityipI know I'm in my own little world, but it's ok - they know me here!0 -

It sounds like she is not going to Oz to run from her debts but for a new life and new job which is not unheard of. I am not saying its a moral thing to do and you should run from your debts but at the same time don't let it keep you here and worrying just because they may be able to trace you to the other side of the world doesnt mean they will or really want too. I know a few people that moved house and and didnt give forwarding address as they were in such debt no matter what they did they couldnt get rid of it and waited out the 6 years and it all cleaned away, so if you can hide in this country what are the chances of them coming after you on the other side of the world??
And because its Yes Loans I would say if you could get it from them which I doubt take it and screw them like they have so many people, I hate Yes loans.
But like I said not saying its the right thing to do, just saying its unlikey they are gonna send the fraud squad to track you down. Most likey default you put you as gone away then it will slide off your report in 6 years
massive difference between not letting debt stop you and borrowing 15k just before you leave the country0 -
Masterlumps - Yes, I agree, especially if it's going to land her in major trouble.. I don't think she or I realised just how much of an affect it could have on her plans to relocate, her job and the rest of her life. I've spoken to her about it, and also our mum who was aware of it too and will try to speak to her about the best plan of action.
The 15k will not come through, thank God, just the rest of her debts that need sorting out.
Pippetypip - I think you are right, it's very close to a lot of people's hearts, especially on a moneysaving board, so I did thank everyone and respect their views. Just didn't want the sister bashing to get out of hand. She is leaving the country and we are all of course worried for her general welfare, let alone this on top.
I have had debt problems myself, and have been made bankrupt nearly 3yrs ago. Maybe she saw this and thought it was easy, whereas I'm sure a lot of us realise it's a cold hard struggle and the sense of fear that you will lose everything is overwhelming. I don't think she saw that side of it, and maybe thought it was the easy option.
Anyway, please keep any help coming, or advice.. I'll take the personal comments on the chin.9/70lbs to lose0
