  • They cannot check this.

There are no exit controls at the UK Border, so there simply isn't a record held that she ever left the country.

Checks can be made, if she has been reported as commiting fraud then the authorities with their very long arms can find her easily enough.

There will be records of her leaving the UK, travel company records, aircraft passenger manifest etc etc. Just because they dont stamp your passport when you leave the UK doesn't mean there is no record.

Make no mistake, she is very traceable.
  • Tell your friend to go to Oz and not to worry, its funny that people defend the banks that are so quick to screw us over. It sounds like she is not going to Oz to run from her debts but for a new life and new job which is not unheard of. I am not saying its a moral thing to do and you should run from your debts but at the same time don't let it keep you here and worrying just because they may be able to trace you to the other side of the world doesnt mean they will or really want too. I know a few people that moved house and and didnt give forwarding address as they were in such debt no matter what they did they couldnt get rid of it and waited out the 6 years and it all cleaned away, so if you can hide in this country what are the chances of them coming after you on the other side of the world??

And because its Yes Loans I would say if you could get it from them which I doubt take it and screw them like they have so many people, I hate Yes loans.

But like I said not saying its the right thing to do, just saying its unlikey they are gonna send the fraud squad to track you down. Most likey default you put you as gone away then it will slide off your report in 6 years

I thought nurses were supposed to be mature, responsible and intelligent.

Some of them are. I know one at least. But, unfortunately, even she would tell you that there are far too many people in the profession who shouldn't be. They don't have the patience or compassion for the job, just the qualification.

Most recently heard of a friend's Grandad who is going through hell after a knee op because simple nursing care was not carried out!

Well that's the biggest load of twoddle i've ever heard!

I work for a Bank, and have done for many years, and my partner is a UKBA case worker.

I can assure you that given how easy it is to chase the debt, and the arrangements in place with Australia, it's now very easy to arrange for an Attachement of Earnings to any income she earns in the country to repay her debts in the UK.

In short, if they want to the debt companies can find you, for minimum time and cost these days too.

Whilst I admit, she may not be charged with a crime or be chased by the fraud squad, but in this situation she could be. If she's a wanted criminal in the UK, then she'll be caught the moment she comes home, does she want that hanging around her neck for ever? What if a relative becomes seriously ill and she wants to come home for some reason, difficult choices there that I wouldn't want to have to make if it were me..

Be realistic with your advice Neolight. Starting a new life abroad, doesn't mean you can erase the one you've had in the UK no matter where you go, thats the beauty of history!

My sister is a fantastic nurse and worked hard for her degree. Unfortunately working in the UK as a nurse is a horrible job, whereas Australia is much more pleasant, less patients, better pay etc.

She came back just under a year ago and had planned on paying the loan off before moving back out there for around 2 yrs, and then going for residency.

I don't agree with her plans, but I can understand why she thinks it would be a good idea. I don't know if they will agree to a reduced payment, or if they'll laugh in her face, but all I want is for her not to get into trouble and ruin things.

She is a lovely person, but probably the excitement of leaving for the place she loves is clouding her judgement about her financial responsibilities..

I agree, she is being a little silly about it all, especially if she ruins her prospects in the future. But she isn't a bad person and she is excellent at her job and cares for people every day, something I could never do, and for that I will try and help her sort this mess out in the best way possible.

I asked for advice on what may or may not happen, so please stop the slating, it's my sister after all.
