Road tax??

As the previous poster said. If you buy one starting next month, you will have a tax disc on display (but it still won't be valid) so plod will be less likely to look closer. There are various rules on how early you can buy a new disc, 15 days and 5 days depending on what the renewal circumstances are. In your situation I think it is 5 days but if you go to the PO with 14 days to go you might get lucky.
Your car is taxed, and as long as you don't go parking on any high streets you should be ok. I mean now without one on display.0 -
Mine was showing as taxed when i bought it, But the dealer said it had been reclaimed before he got it a week before.
He taxed it on my behalf and it was still showing the old date 3 weeks after.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
No.
Only has to be posted before the end of the month... not received by DVLA.
To quote from the refund form...
Did a check and you were spot on, the information I gave was accurate several years ago, I just remembered that was information that I eiter read or was told by the DVLA, in my defence it was 14 years since I last refunded a taxdisc.0 -

However even though there is no disc when I looked on the DVLA site it appears the car is taxed to the end of this month.
Can I use it as taxed and pay a penalty if caught for failure to display the disc? What is the penalty for failure to display the disc. I am insured.
I obviously cannot tax it until the insurance docs come (Churchill 5 to 7 days). Would it be legal to tax it from the beginning of next month. If I tax it now DVLA will be getting 2 lots of money for the same month.
If I did run without a disc I would check the DVLA site each day to confirm the status has not changed eg the previous owner getting a refund.
Thanks
You may just be able to get the info, ie, surrended or otherwise by contacting the last owner on the V5 if it's in your possesion. Did this once to check on a very low mileage car from auction.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Very true, you may be able to make this check; however without the/a valid tax disc if you use the vehicle on the public highway anywhere you will be commiting at least one offence - failing to display a valid excise licence.
The only exception to this being if you are taking a vehicle to/from an MOT station for a booked MOT test (I know the name has changed from MOT).
Only the OP can decide if they want to take a chance or not; but is it worth it - they are losing nothing by taxing the vehicle straight away, and even if they were we are talking 1/12th of the annual rate which for most cars is an awful lot less than the potential fines incurred for various offences.0 -
The insurance came quicker than Churchill said so I have taxed it today. all nice and legal now.
Until the mot on 18th November.
Thanks for all replies.0 -

You are of course correct but with this knowledge assuming it proved the car still to be taxed, you can make the decision whether to chance it based on the fact that it is still taxed and will not get tugged by any anpr stuff.
.
Anyway the op is sorted,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

You will not be able to buy a tax disc starting next month until the end of this month as you would need the old tax disc to do this in advance (I think).
Also, road tax discs have to be displayed. It is failure to display a tax disc that brings about a spot fine I think, so just being registered for tax with the DVLA is not enough. I recently had a car written-off after getting rear-ended whilst waiting to enter a roundabout.....the insurer and the police both asked me to leave the car at the scene of the accident for the time being. Because the car can be opened (due to the impact of the accident), I asked the police if I could remove the tax disc in case someone nicked it and they advised that I shouldn't.0 -
