Exit tax from Mexico

Has anyone been to Cancun recently and if so, how much is the exit tax? Have been told it is around £30-£40 but not sure if this is per person or per couple. Also been informed that dollars are no longer to be used - only Mexican pesos.

It's the equivalent of US $50-60
  • We were there in January and it was either $50 or $60, can't remember.

    It is charged per person.

My boss has gone to Mexico today and he said last week that his travel company had telephoned and said no more US$ to be used.

  • I went to Cancun last April with Thomas Cook (arrived a day before the swine flu outbreak! still had a fantastic time and none of us got ill haha) and we had to pay $50 departure tax per person just before the check in desk.
Have a read through your flight tickets in the booklet if there is one, or call the airline you're flying with.
    Some airlines include departure tax.
    Have a great time, i'm jealous :)
  • The link below shows my comments on a similar question in an earlier thread. The info applied in April 2010. Don't know about the change to "no more US$."

  • Just done some quick research into the "No more US$" and the first article on this page seems to explain the changes.

Seems that Mexican banks are limiting the amount of US$ they will accept from Mexican citizens. This may result in shops wanting payment in pesos instead. Don't know if this will also apply at the airport for the exit tax, or if there will also start to be restrictions on any other 'foreign' currency.

    Hope that helps.
