Help with houttuynia please

I bought some houttuynia cordata chameleon (?) to cover a bare patch, and it looks colourful, but hasn't spread.

Will this suddenly happen One Fine Day, and run rampant over the whole garden  or have I not treated it correctly. I just water it every day.

I also have a ground cover plant (weed?) with a similarly shaped leaf, but it is dark green with a white squiggly bit in the middle, and mauve flowers, and I can't find a picture of a smilar plant on any of the numerous websites.

It doesn't grow in any other part of the garden, except along my dry river bed, near some pampas grass, and I think it looks very attractive in this setting, but I wish I knew what it was.

Is this possibly another variety of houttuynia, or a second cousin twice removed?

I'd be grateful for any help!

xx

This one doesn't need anything special - it takes a while to get established (and will die right down over the winter and you will THINK you've lost it!) In the spring it will all shoot up again and, if you are patient, you will soon have it everywhere - spreads like the Devil! Easy to prpogate , just dig up a bit of root and that will grow into a new plant.

A plant you either love or hate but, in the right place, its OK for ground cover and the leaves are pretty.

    Hosta?

It's a lot smaller than a hosta, but perhaps it's a miniature hosta - is there such a thing?

  • Found it! It's Lamium Maculatum - Elizabeth de Haas. Nice to be able to give it a name, instead of calling it "that plant"!!
