I booked a trip to a hotel in Ipswich on the 23rd of August, for a stay on 18th September...
I gave notice that I would not be able to make it on 29th August, due to splitting up with my girlfriend.
The hotel operates a £50 non refundable deposit...which I'm not sure is entirely legal...but anyway, I asked to have a return of the £50 because I have written to them within 7 days of the purchase date in accordance to the distance selling regulations...they rejected it saying they sell accommodation and don't have to refund it.
Is there anything I can do?

They're correct in that DSRs don't apply to hotel accommodation, and it's pretty standard to have non-refundable deposits. I assume you saw a copy of the t&c when you booked so unless you can show there's anything in there that they're not complying with I don't see that you can do a lot0
