A chap at work needs some cheap contents insurance on a small flat/bedsit. What comparison websites are best to use? First place on his own so never had insurance before.

  • Try as many of the online direct insurance companies as you can think of(e.g. Direct Line, Churchill, esure, Halifax, Norwich Union, Tesco, morethan - look through the yellow pages to get the namkes but get the quotes online) then try https://www.confused.com which will enter all your details in as many sites as it can, and then try one or two brokers as well (e.g. theaa.com).

In your case the key will be to make sure you keep the cover limits down to the right level so that you don't pay for what you need. Some policies will tend to work out better for large cover limits, and others will work out better for low cover limits lsuch as this. You'll find huge differences between quotes.

If he lives in a council owned property it may be worth contacting the council to ask if they operate a contents insurance scheme as I know some local authorities now do so for tenants.

It was started because so many tenants failed to take out contents insurance because of the cost & were left high & dry when something adverse happened. The scheme offers low cost insurance to council tenants.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • One other thing - if you can afford to pay the premium in one go then do, because by paying monthly you're almost certainly paying interest at quite a high rate.
