i reckon it must be a southern thing

I still can't believe after all these years i've finally got a name for this beautiful tart!! Plus it looks so simple to make! I remember after the we finished our main meal we went to pick up our puddings and i used to stand there looking for the tart that was cut from the corner so i could break more pastry off to dip into the filling!! LOL! I was a greedy kid. Mum never made puddings! :p

They sell this tart? Which shop? Probably make my own though as it looks simple enough but just curious to know! Lol!
  • They sell them in the bakery in Asda in Folkestone, Kent. They are very yummy indeed! I may have a go at making one tomorrow though :-)

I had this at school in Woodley (Berkshire) and again in Christchurch (then Hampshire, now Dorset) so it can't just be a Kent thing.

    Still scrumola though :T

I have never heard of it before, but I think I may just have to try it when I get home from work tomorrow - it sounds so easy and delish! I think I even have all the ingredients in the cupboard - evap milk, brown sugar and ingredients for pastry...

I also thought it was just a Kent thing. I made one for people at work when I moved up north as they had never heard of it either - mixed reviews from them. Mind you, they didn't like bread pudding either - philistines! :rotfl:

We were always served it with half an apple - I think it was supposed to get all the yummy sticky filling off our poor teeth!
  • Sorry - not just a Kent thing. We used to have Gypsy tart at school in Somerset. It was a creamy toffee goo on a pastry case with a blob of cream (probably artificial) on the top. It were gert lush.

  • It might have originated in Kent - but I have fond memories of this at school in Aberdeenshire!!
