Sky HD cable needing to extend, what do I need?

We recently got Sky HD installed in to the flat, but now we want move the TV point in the flat.
I begrudge paying Sky to come out and do the work required. So planning to do it myself.

I notice there is two cables coming in to the flat. Are these both standard coax cable just?

I have a reel of black PF1000 coax cable and was wondering am I simply able to connect this to both SKY cables to extend it round the flat? Will this impair the HD quality?

  • SkyHD requires a 2 core cable I believe.

A quick google brings up plenty of threads in the avforum.com though and you can buy pre-made Sky extension cables in most Homebase style stores though IIRC

Are the two cables both for Sky?

Lots of people sell the appropriate cable, like here http://www.aerialshack.com/metre-extension-cable-p-608.html

Go to TV shop, buy the length of sat co-ax you need, four F connectors and two female to female couplers and make your own.

yes that is just ordinary Coax however satellite cables tend to need to be of the 'double screened' variety

I'm unfamiliar with your PF1000 but if you pull one of the ends apart and find an outer layer of copper strands plus copper foil thats perfect.

Copper strands plus some silvery/plastic film that'll very likely be 'OK'

copper strands only will prove sub standard -might be ok if the distance is small and its high quality cable with alot of copper strands. up to you if you want to give it a go.

other than that you just need some F-connectors as described above. you can get these from Maplins (will charge you over the odds) or any suitable hardware store, alternatively you could probably butcher your existing Sky cable if it was just maade up from 'push-on' type end connectors (but not if they were 'crimped' on or moulded on ends)

I'll see if I can find a picture for the cable types...
