Benefits Advice – Leaving Job

I am currently working my notice to leave my current FT time in mid-September to start a six week training course in the industry in which I want to work and I am seeking advice on what I can claim in terms of benefits. I’ve had a look at Entitledto.com but just wanted some clarification on some points.

I live with my partner who doesn’t work and our toddler.

I currently claim HB but am only in receipt of a small sum.

As I am leaving my job in the middle of the month, I am unsure whether I will be paid my final salary on the last day of the month (I need to check up on this). I would welcome some advice on when I should contact HB / CTB / TC / IS, ie when I will be eligible to claim, also I already receive HB so should I just give them a call or will I have to re-submit the paperwork.

Thanks

Will your partner be seeking work?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • I'm not sure if you'll qualify for much in the way of benefits, you've volantarily given up your job and also won't be looking for work as you'll be doing a training course, so won't be eligible for JSA whilst your on the course and may be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks any way for leaving a job.
you may get all your rent and council tax paid, child benefit and child tax credits.
I hate to ask an obvious question but did you not think to find out about this before decideing to quit your job?
  • Not at the moment.
  • I have a Job waiting for me after the course. but couldnt spend much longer in the job i was doing. If I can receive benefit to pay my rent and council tax that would help me. How do i go about applying for these?

If you're already getting LHA I'd give the council a call when your circumstances change to inform them, they will then have to adjust the amount of LHA you get, same with council tax, I'd also call child tax credits when your doing this as you might be entitled to more for a short while as your income will have dropped.
Think that's about it though and when you're working again you'll need to do the same thing :)
  • You and your partner would both be entitled to income support, if your child is under 7 years old, it does not matter that you have quit your job, you need to phone them the day after you leave to start your claim. also you should recieve full council tax benefit, unsure of how housing benefit works, but think you get most of it paid, as you already have a claim with them it should be pretty much straight forward if you phone them.
    Good luck with your course.

no, you need to be either a singe parent, carer or disabled to get income support, they would not qualify!!
  • Does not make it clear on benefit pages although this was on direct gov, but maybe phone benefit office and ask them if you are entitled or speak to CAB.
    Families and Income Support

You can claim Income Support for yourself and your partner.
Jobcentre Plus will treat you as a couple if you live with:
    • your husband, wife or civil partner
    • someone as if they were your husband, wife or civil partner
Jobcentre Plus call this other person your partner.
Income Support is no longer paid for children if you're making a new claim. To get money for children, you must now claim Child Tax Credit instead.
Only one person in a family can claim Income Support at any one time. There are several types of premiums (extra amounts) you may get based on your and your partner's circumstances. Contact Jobcentre Plus to find out more.
  • you are giving out false and misleading information, they are not entitled to income support...

    Who can get Income Support

It's for people who all the following apply to:
    • are between age 16 and the age they can get Pension Credit
    • have a low income
    • work less than 16 hours a week
    • aren't in full-time study (but there are some exceptions)
    • don't get Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance
    • don't have savings above £16,000
    • live in Great Britain
You may get Income Support if you are one of the following:
    • a lone parent
    • on parental or paternity leave
    • a carer
    • a refugee learning English who arrived less than a year ago

IS is definately out. JSA may well be out too because you will be on a training course and not looking for work.

Is it on the job training?
