How to stop unsolicited emails?

Hi Guys,

I don't know much about computer just basics only so hope someone can help me. I am receiving a lot of unsolicited emails on my yahoo account everyday about 3-5 and looks like from America. So everytime I can spot one I just click the spam button or whatever you call it. How can I stop or minimize these unsolicited emails? Thanks

Only by changing your email address, and telling just those people whom you want to know it... (This works for a short time, but the spammers will find the new address eventually.)

  • I also seem to have started receiving a lot (5-10 / day) emails of a very depraved and sordid nature with a link to some website. They alter the spelling in the main message to i assume get it through any blocking software. I'm getting fed up of just deleting these, can my isp do anything about it?
    Thanks

Some ISPs use spam-elimination software on their mail servers. I've never had a single spam message when on blueyonder (advt!).

I don't often give my email address to people. It's purely for personal use. I don't even join chat groups or yahoo messenger. I don't know how it started but it keeps coming.I am being fed up of deleting it.
  • I'm also finding that a specific email address I gave to a limited number of people is now being spammed. I can only assume that the spammers have accessed the address books on their PCs perhaps because they dont have a firewall.

I use a program called MailWasher to check and delete all unwanted email on the servers before I download any email to my computer. That way you can get rid of any spam+attachments before it gets near your PC. The last freeware version (1.33) is available here.

MailWasher 1.33 allows you to check a number of email addresses if you have more than one. I check four or five. You can also set up filters in it to automatically tag any incoming email which doesnt have a genuine address and mark it for deletion. Its one of the most useful utilities on my machine.

It's quite easy. Generate enough random email addresses and eventually you'll hit someone's account.
