    Your not going to get anything out of the warranty route from the retailer tbh... not after nearly 4 years at least!

    Best bet is to open the drive, try it yourself and if nothing works then contact the HDD manufacturers... but they wont recover your data free, neither will the retailer - your data = your responsibility.

  • The time hard drives last can vary substantially, 3 years 4 months I would say is probably lower than average but not unreasonably short. Ive had hard drives pack up after 1 year of minimal use and others that are still working fine after 7-8 years of heavy use. External drives do tend to have a shorter life due to higher vibrations/being dropped/banged/having a worse power supply etc
