Home insurance and oil leak

Having moved back in march, to a house with oil central heating we discovered we had an oil leak.
We had just filled the tank and lost approximately 700 litres into the ground over 24 hours.
We contacted our insurance to be told that we were covered for the repair of the leak and the loss of oil but not the recovery of the lost oil.
We dutifully contacted the environmental agency, to tell them of our leak and were advised that the oil needed to be removed and that a similar incident locally had cost £30,000 to put right.
I was astonished at the cost, but more importantly that I was not covered. Our policy like so many others out there cover damage to all paths, and decking but not to the soil in my garden even though I would consider this to be part of my property. Ironically I was covered by third party legal cover, so if my neighbour wanted me to put right the soil in their garden I was covered but not for my own.
SO BEWARE ALL THOSE OUT THERE THAT HAVE OIL HEATING, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR TANKS ARE NO WHERE NEAR AREAS THAT COULD LEAK ONTO SOIL, YOU COULD BE STUNG FOR A VERY BIG BILL TO PUT IT RIGHT.
I had a plan..........its here somewhere.
