Yes, I believe our solicitors started all searches within a week of us instructing them but 5 weeks later we are still waiting for water and local searches to come in. It still took 3 weeks for the land registery search to come in (we have had that for 2 weeks already).
Suppose it really depends on where you live0 -
Yes our local searches took about 2 weeks to come in and our water and environmental searches took 5 weeks to come back. This is the stuff that takes the time.0

Your local authority search should take a maximum of up to 14 days (dependant on council and whether the solicitor has gone through a personal search company or the council direct. The council route will take much longer)
Environmental search normally within 5 days
Water & Drainage searches 5-10 days if gone direct to the appropriate water company. A private water and drainage search maybe 5 days.
Coal mining - within 5 days
Your solicitor may be waiting for everything to come back and it may be the local authority search that it is holding it up. Maybe ring them to see if they have received any searches back and if you can view them.0 -
It can also depend upon whether the LA has a backlog. Of course a personal search only takes 1 hour and costs you ten quid.;)0
