What about the PIO card. Person of indian origin.
Is that the same kind of thing as OCI?

It is similar but not the same. PIO is kind for 15 years visa to India and you get some other benefits. OCI is recently introduced and gives much more. OCI is life long Visa. You get all the benefits as an Indian citizen gets with exception of voting, government employment and buying farm land. On other fronts its almost equivalent to Indian citizenship.
I don't see a reason to go for PIO instead of OCI now.
