mobile from phones 4 u altrincham

Hello, me again.
Any advice or previous experience I could draw on?
Bought a mobile - only a cheap one, from this firm yesterday.
The chap selling it forgot to register the credit on it though, so after charging it for the first time last nite I soon found out it wasn't topped up. this was about 8pm so too late to call the store.
I rang this morning and spoke to the manager...he basically behaved as if I'd nicked the tenner's credit, but said I could return to the store and he'd try to find out what happened.
The shop's ten miles away, so not a pop down the road job. 3 autistic kids to take too, bit of a hassle. So tried to sort it out on the phone. The store eventually gave me the credit voucher number, but it was the wrong one.
DOH. still not sorted.
They told me to ring voda. Either way I'm out of pocket. Not in the mood for being taken for an idiot but think I did it all by myself when I went in that store in the first place.
when I looked at the phone last nite it kept switching off, and did it again today.
I eventually returned to the shop - when I got there I asked if they could sort out the phone - explained the problem but the salesman just wanted to sort out the issue with the credit, and made various comments like 'you must have used it' and 'you can delete call history you know'...so now I'm being treated like a thief. Nice.
The demeanour of the store was basically - we're trying to help you and you're not all smiles about it. Well, trouble was they weren't all that helpful - the issue with the phone was not addressed, they will not refund my phone, and pretty much called me a thief. I'd said I had wanted to exchange it for a better quality phone - more ££ for them too but that was that. Can't help thinking this was a bit odd?
Just before leaving (having been in there for ages waiting about largely) I said I'd not be back to spend any more money with them and the delightful manager, Richard, delighted me further by saying 'that would be best for all concerned'.
I'd pointed out as vendors they had a duty of care but was met with 'NO WE DONT' from the off.
Has anyone had any luck with forcing a refund from one of these places? if so, how? I don't want to deal with this lot again - think 'fat clammy sycophant' and you'll probably get why, (ew) so any useful input would be gratefully received! GGRRR!!!
