Basics -
DOB 20/03/1992 (Bet you feel old ;))
Passed test 28th Oct 2009.
Fully comp on parents car in around December 2009.

Got a job/apprenticeship with James Dawson, which i start this week. Get around £800-£900 p/m. I have near 600quid savings currently.

Ideally i want a 2003/2004 1.4 Ford Focus Zetec.
Cost about £2000. Through Gocompare i get fully comp policy holder between £3,500-£3,800 (cheapest)

I dont want to have to walk to work, and live life without being able to use a car at the main periods of my day so i dont want to have to wait too long.

I dont really want to have to save for four months?

Car loan? Been quoted (through comparison sites) For £2000, i'd pay back over a year, £2180ish. then i pay for the first month of paying this and car insurance out of my savings.

What offers would dealers do on new cars?

Hope someone can help me, i'm stuck big time! Thanks! :money:

  • Jamie - I can not stress this enough. Do not waste your money on a new car. They depreciate in value faster than you realise. You are 18 and not in a position to be getting into debt.

What exactly are you asking people to try and help you with? Nobody will advise you to get a loan (I'm not sure a lender would be willing to give you one based on age/income etc). This also applies for finance on a 'new' car.

Ford Focus's are high insurance groups to start with. Go for a different car.

Why a 1.4 ford zetec, it would cost alot to insure as you have found out, go for a car with a 1.1 engine like a corsa, plus theres no need to have a 1.4 at a young age, start of small then work your way up

Just noticed this in your post. I hope you arn't hoping to get 'mum' or 'dad' insured as the policy holder then add you as a named driver. Not only is this illegal - your insurance is not valid if you are the main driver of the vehicle.

As others have suggested, a 1.0l nissan micra is about the level of car you should be looking at. Even the insurance on that will be horrendously high.
  • Corsa 1litre is £3,000 my cheapest quote, and everything is pretty similar. So i thought i might as well get a car i like and would enjoy driving for that 500pound extra insurance, however it is quite abit cheaper to buy.

I'm asking to be advised on routes to go which i can explore which would be suitable. So input like this is helpful. Please keep it up!

Oops! I dont mean named driver. I mean policy holder. (hence the cost being so high in the first place) ta' for pointing out the mistake =] (shall be corrected)

Try DirectLine as they aren't on GoCompare.

Unfortunatly, you are going to have to pay a really high premium regardless of what car you buy because you are an 18 year old male.

The cheapest thing you an do is buy (or inherit if possible!) an older car with a tiny tiny engine. That will help keep your premium to the lowest it can be.

Get your mum or dad insured as a named driver - this tends to bring premiums down a little.

As previously said - you wont get a loan/finance. That is for your own good as much as the lenders!

You also need to remember that if you have an accident, you will need to fork out for the policy excess which will probably be high given your risk factor. You need to work this into your 'budget' for car buying.

Direct Line have ALWAYS come out as one of the highest for me (47) and for my 19 year old son. They constantly advertise but believe me they were one of the worst quotes. And this is with no claims or convictions!
