Hot Chocolate - low fat

Hi, i am currently trying to loose weight but i love hot chocolate, i have a mug before i go to bed and i don't want to stop doing this as it helps me sleep. I use cadburys drinking choclate at the moment with semi skimmed milk, i know this is high in calories so i was looking for a low fat alternative. I like hot chocolate thick and chocolatey and have tried a couple of low fat sachets and to me they just tasted of water. Has anyone tried any diet/low fat ones that were nice and chocolatey or any ideas how i could make it less fattening. Thanks

I'd recommend Options (Belgian Chocolate flavour) if you don't mind the odd dose of artificial sweetner. I can't stand any of the others. :D
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.
  • I'd go for options too - they dont taste watery at all :)

Yep, the Belgian Chocolate Options gets my vote, too. Its also nicer if you add just a splash of skimmed milk into it ;) (but do it after you've put the boiling water in, otherwise its very hard to get rid of the "lumps" - obvious to most, I'm sure :p - but some of us found out the hard way!!:rotfl:).

Depends if you also want to ignore hydrogenated fats as well as most "add water" chocolate drinks contain this.

I know you say you like it thick and chocolatey but have you tried reduceing the number of spoonfulls you put in? I make our night drinks with about 1-1.5 spoonfulls per cup and they are very chocolately

I went to check this before I posted my first reply. Options only states vegetable fat - so does that mean its hydrogenated? (I've mentioned this on the tansfats thread too.)

NOT a cheap option, but I personally cannot stand Options... I get this from a health food shop.

Clipper (fairtrade) Organic Instant Hot Chocolate.

It comes in a glass jar, or in sachets which are labelled Clipper Organic low fat double chocolate (or something similarly confusing)

Per Serving 98 kcal, 0.4g fat, 0.3g of which saturates. 19.5g carbs.

Ing: Fairtrade sugar  Whey Powder, skimmed milk powder, Fairtrade fat reduced cocoa powder.

    Make with hot water.

This tastes really chocolatey and adult (this coming from someone who prefers 70% to cadburys). For more info try https://www.clipper-teas.com
  • You could be really worthy and make your own. Buy a bar of chocolate with a high-cocoa content (70% or above) - I think the 'Divine' one's really nice, and conscience-salving too. Finely grate 20g-30g of chocolate per cup (you could grate in bulk if you don't have the time to do this every night), then stir into a little hot milk until the chocolate's melted, then stir this mixture into a cup of hot milk (skimmed is fine), add sugar to taste. This way, you're in control of how much sugar / chocolate you use, there should be no dodgy fats / chemicals (unless they're in the chocolate already) and, although it may not be as low in calories as some of the commercial brands, it should at least be better for you. Tastes really luxourious too! Mmm, chocolate...:EasterBun
  • I've never understood the point of hot chocolate. Surely it's just cocoa with sugar and dried milk ? You could make it with skimmed milk and add dried milk powder for extra richness without the cals. Add sugar or sweetener to taste.
