Anyone advise on laying sleepers?

Hi

Will maybe be getting my hands on some sleepers for edging. Does anybody know how the lay them?I've read conflicting advice from complicated bedding in and the other extreme, they just hold themselves under their own weight.

Any help vey gratefully appreciated!

Thanks

  • it depends what you're doing with them. If they're retaining soil or you're putting down more than one layer you will need to fix them properly. The softwood sleepers will need fixing as well as they don't weigh enough.
For one layer as an edging I would lay them in channel about 2" deep. Cement or sand will provide a nice level surface to lay them on. This is especially true with the old sleepers
Fix them together with brackets, this will stop them moving as well.
