E.ON - How long to setup an account?

I moved into a new-build new house in mid August and was advised by the agency that the supplier is E.ON. I've previously been with EDF and so was planning to transfer, but decided to see what E.ON are like.

I've just called as after nearly a month they still haven't sent any documents despite the agency informing me they'd contact E.ON directly asap with details of who I was and meter readings.

I emailed E.ON about 2 weeks ago to query where things were up to and then complained by email last week as I hadn't had a response within 5 days. I called today and asked if they had setup an account and initially the answer was no, and that they'd need to do a credit check and do meter readings.

I refused as they should already have this info, so the advisor went away and then came back somehow with the meter readings and quoted them to me (sounded correct and checked meter which looked about right) and then said they'd send a welcome pack as they had everything they need.

Does 3-4 weeks seem normal for this? I'm a bit concerned that they haven't been in contact before..

Hi pmhtuk - Keep a very tight record of the phone-calls and Emails to E.on, and your meter readings

It's not unknown for selling agents to be entirely wrong in who the utility Suppliers are, with the result that a long while later another supplier says "You are ours" and sends in a big bill.
The 'False' supplier then gives you your money back, but because you have not been able to negotiate with the 'Proper' supplier to get onto their best tariff, thier bill will be larger than the amount of money returned by the 'False' supplier

Ah, it was the housing company who advised it was E.ON and E.ON have also confirmed that it is them who supply after speaking with them.

But i'll give it until next week to see what comes in the post.

If you call the supplier, there should be no reason the account can't be set up there and then.

    That's how it normally happens.

Why did you refuse to supply the supplier with the start readings?

Because they were sent them in August and I didn't have them to hand.

However, after 30 seconds or so, the advisor 'suddenly' found them on the system.

Did you supply them to the supplier in August? If so, the account should have been set up then.

If not, that would be the reason the supplier asked you for them now.

If you didn't know what they were, or otherwise didn't have them to hand, you should have told the supplier that rather than refuse to provide the details requested. Your refusal could lead to suspicion.
