Rosehips - which ones do i use??
I have decided to make rosehip syrup this year so I wont have to buy any vitamin c tablets to keep colds at bay. Went away for a walk to pick some and was slightly confused as to which ones would be best! so didnt pick any. There are the really big ones about 2cm in diameter and an orangey colour, or there are the smaller ones about half that size and they range from red to a deep wine colour - can anyone advise as its quite a bit work by the time you boil the syrup up etc that I dont want to waste electric, sugar and time! many thanks

Hi Suzy,
You don't really need to make rosehip syrup to get extra vit C. The recommended daily dose is 40mg, and just for instance, one ripe medium tomato contains 34mg. Lots of fruit and veg contain a lot of vit C apart from the obvious oranges and grapefruit.
One cupful of broccoli contains 120mg! And red (bell) peppers 174mg per cupful!! Cabbage, kale, turnip greens, cauliflower, sprouts all have lots.
Take a look at "The World's Healthiest Foods" website here: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=109#foodsourcesIf I'm over the hill, where was the top?0 -
Suzybloo....you can use any kind of hip...they just come from different type roses, mix them and chop up a bit.....can I warn you that I made syrup about 30 years ago when my children were young and they wouldn't touch it....put some yeast into it and made the nicest dessert wine I have ever made, took a few years to mature though! So you see, it won't be waste....

A super use for rose hip syrup is creme brule. OH had it in a restaurant in scandinavia with it at the bottom. It was mega Yummy ( I sneaked a taste)

You can use any - the smaller ones are probably wild roses - as long as they're ripe. They should have a bit of 'give' to them without being squashy. I've used ones from my garden that are more or less wild with a few added from friends' cultivated roses, tastes OK to me!October 2025 GC £36.83/£400

Many thanks for your replies, its a gorgeous day here so will be out walking this afternoon, and will gather them and brambles then. I will let you know how it turns out. We usually eat quite well and will be getting more than the recommended daily amount, but when we feel a cold coming on we up the intake so thought this would be a good idea.
typical kids Marie - you goto all that bother and they turn their noses up!!!!!
will try the creme brulee with it too!
have a good day,Every days a School day!0 -
