Help with HP Photosmart C4480 please

I fitted a HP black compatible cartridge last week and printed several sheets before getting a message --'' incompatible print cartridge ''.
I've followed advice seen on several forums regarding cleaning cartridge etc. but the message is still there --this does seem to a repeating problem with HP printers and the solution seems to be to fit a new compatible cartridge. Can anyone recommend a compatible HP 350 that works please and is this a problem with just HP as I may decide to buy a new All-in-One printer.

My printer has the same problem. It just sits on my computer desk like an ornament now - for the past few days, but seems longer! Help! Replaced with HP cartridges but no joy. Unfortunately warranty has just expired. Seems a shame to replace it as it was a great printer......and I can't afford another one. Open to any other quick fix suggestions.0
