Slow machine. More memory or just give up?

Intel celeron CPU 2.6ghz
223 MB RAM

Got a number of issues on a Packard Bell Machine that belongs to a friend of mine.

On start up the system is trying install windows, explorer and a photocopier attached to the machine, which makes it incredibly slow to start up. The entire system just crawls. The internet connection (wireless) can also be frustratingly slow.

We've run CCleaner and now debating whether its worth getting someone to install more memory or to give up and buy a new machine. This one is 5/6 years old.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

You really do need a minimum of 512MB to run XP half decently. 1GB would make it fly.
    https://www.crucial.com
Have you defragged it as well as running CCleaner?
No reason why a 6yr old machine shouldn't have bit more life in it yet.
Unlikely that the slow internet connection is due necessarily to a slow PC.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Run malwarebytes as malware may be partially responsible.
    Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 - FileHippo.com
Once downloaded and installed, click UPDATE tab and CLICK FOR UPDATE. Then run a full scan and post the log produced here.

    (Instructions below from alienRIK!)
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

Don't think defragging will make a massive difference personally...

Stop them starting for no good reason at boot .

CCleaner Tools Start-up Disable the non essentials .

Why is the machine trying to install windows at boot? Is it not already installed?

Has your friend backed up the data?
  • Thanks for your help so far. Been to Crucial. The extra memory we'll need won't break the bank! :) Will run the defrag.

And when you are clean run Windows Updates-you are still on XP SP2 (should be SP3).
I would still go for some more RAM though.

Don't buy the memory just yet. Crucial isn't the cheapest option.
Go into CCleaner > Tools > Startup and disable all of the start up items.

    Next;

Click on the Tools menu option in Internet Explorer, followed by the Internet Options... option.

Choose the Connections tab from the Internet Options window.

Click on the LAN Settings... button. The Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window will appear.

Remove the tick from the box next to; Use a proxy server for your LAN

    Click OK.
  • "Go buy more ram!" is always the answer, yes it helps but this is a Money Saving website!

Yesterday I spent 4 hours giving my neighbours 2.6 P4 with 256MB ram a good cleanout which was as slow as a dog and now runs almost new. It's running XP Home with SP3.

Do the usual maintenance yourself before you spend any money, here's what I did:-

    1) Remove her old Norton Security Suite which expired and replaced with a free version of Avast.

    2) Downloaded Spybot and gave the PC a scan which was almost clean.

    3) Ran Disk Cleanup (Accessories>System Tools) and Disk Defrag. Disk cleanup removed 5GB of old/temp data from the 40GB drive!

    4) Stopped unnecessary programs starting up using MSconfig.

    5) Removed about 3 search/tool add-on's in Internet Explorer.

I didn't change any of the environment settings such as display or the page file, but I did stop indexing on the C drive.

She's so happy with the PC now as it would take her anything up to 2 mins to wait for a response for whatever she wanted to do.
