Asking for a rent reduction...

I've been living in my flat for 2 and a half years, and in that time the rent prices have gone down quite a bit. Similar properties in my street are being rented out for £50 less than what I pay for mine. Do you think there is any chance I would get a reduction in my rent if I asked my landlord?

  • There's no harm in asking if you've garnered together enough compelling evidence to give to your landlord. Their response might be to issue a Section 21 Notice, so be prepared to move into one of those cheaper properties if necessary.

I doubt he even knows what a Section 21 Notice is to be honest... :)
  • In that case risking getting into a disagreement with an uninformed landlord might not be one you'd want to take lightly. Have you viewed any of these other cheaper properties to ensure you're comparing like with like? Perhaps swapping a decent landlord for a bad one for £50 a month may not be a fair exchange

I have been considering moving anyway, the landlord is ok but not too bothered about any issues I have... the area I live in isn't brilliant, I think I'd prefer to get a better place for the same money I pay now. I was thinking maybe a reduction until I find something else would have helped with the deposit. My ex just ran off with £1000 of my money and other things, that was meant to be a deposit on somewhere else... so back to saving again!
  • Oh, are you the unfortunate lass who was the victim of that serial scammer scumbag? Any luck with the police enquiries?

Yeah that's me, the police took my statement last week but so far nothing, a guy who was conned by the same guy last year called the police in the week and they are doing a DNA match with Suffolk police... so at least they're doing something. It's just a case of waiting I think...
