the cable from the phone socket will go into your modem, the calbe from the modem will go into your router

check out the different wireless routers, on theboxes they usually say what cables if any are included or required

Does OP need a wireless router.

As I read it the desktop wil be physically connected to the router with only the laptop being wireless.

Therefore he could just install wireless cards in the desktop & laptop and create a wireless network using the desktop as the router - note this means the desktop will have to be working all of the time.

If OP wants to create a full wireless network with everything connected wirelessly he might have to replace his modem as well if it's a USB version.

In that case he may as well get a wireless router (netgear 834g perhaps?) that has a built in modem.

In any case he will need an ordinary network cable in order to set up the router initially
  • It's a cable modem, so doesn't use phone line - just needs a Cat5e ethernet patch cable to connect to new wireless router and a second Cat 5e patch cable to connect router to desktop.

@netdumdum - take a look in the Techie Terms, Add & Ask sticky; you'll see a piccy of the type of cables you need in there.

As for new wireless router, suggest you buy a KCorp Lifestyle Gateway Wireless Router Gold Series. It's the only wireless device on the PC Pro 'A' List. £67. More info here.
