Help with new internet connection

I've recently moved house and OH has set up broadband with BT. His laptop is quite happy with this, mine is less so :( Is anyone able to help please?

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition. I usually use Firefox, but am experiencing the same problems with Internet Explorer.

Basically, I only seem to be able to access some websites (luckily MSE is ok! :D) I can't access Hotmail or Facebook. I can't access the BBC. I can access my Credit card, I can't access online banking.

I am either clicking on Favourites, using Google to search for the website (which works fine) or typing the address into the address bar. It will take a long time to "search" for the website and then either come up with a completely blank screen (Hotmail), a screen that just has Time New Roman style typing and no pictures (Facebook), or a message saying there's a problem loading the page, "Firefox can't find the server....."

What's going on please?! It must be something on my laptop, OH's is fine, but I don't know where to start looking :o

A quick answer is its not the Internet but looks like your security settings or AV suite .
Try turning off AV and test , Check via Control Panel Parental Controls should be off .
Check Firefox add on settings via Tools add ons disable all and try .

None of that works start from scratch and re enter all your ISP set-up details .
Paying attention to the DNS settings as the Internet works but you are failing to translate your address of https://www.something.cm into the correct format of 11.122 80.666 .
In fact i would check DNS server first .

Thank you, unfortunately that appears to be a website with the "Problem loading page" error!

I've turned off the AV (Avira) but no difference with that. Not sure where the Parental Controls bit would be, but I've never turned them on and it was fine on the internet I had at my previous home, so don't think it's that. I tried turning off the firewall too just now and no joy with that one either. Same with the Firefox add ons too.

I have no idea how to check the DNS server - where do I need to look and what do I need to click on??

    Thank you!

    From the website:
    1. Open the Windows Control Panel. Control Panel can be found on the Windows Start Menu.
    2. Open the "Network Connections" icon in Control Panel. The Control Panel will refresh to become the "Network Connections" window. If necessary, first open the "Network and Internet Connections" icon in Control panel, then choose "Network Connections" from within that screen.
    3. The Network Connections window lists all Dial-up and LAN / High-Speed Internet connections installed. In the list of LAN / High Speed Internet connections, select the icon that corresponds to the network you wish to enable or disable.
    4. Right-click on the selected network connection. A pop-up menu appears. If the connection is currently enabled, the first option in this menu will be "Disable." Otherwise, the first menu option will be "Enable."
    5. Select this first menu option to alternately disable or enable the connection.
    6. Close the Network Connections / Control Panel window when finished.

    Check your net connections .

    DNS settings how to find
Go to Control Panel>Network Connections and select your local network.Click Properties, then select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).Click Properties. Internet Protocol window.

set to the standard Optain DNS server automatically That should connect to whatever your ISP uses as the DNS server.

Lokolo's idea seems to have worked - I reconnected using the disk BT sent out, rather than just telling the laptop to search for wireless connections as per the first attempt! Not to self - you areuseless with computers, don't try to be clever!

I do so appreciate the help you all offer here, thank you!
