Do I have NCD or not?

I'm 23 and been a named driver on the insurance policy for a family car for about 3.5 years. This year I'd like my own policy (and the car is being transferred to my name).
I last claimed in 2008 for a Windscreen crack and 2007 for vandalism to the car. I obviously state these claims, however I'd like to know if as a named driver, the fact I haven't claimed for two years gives me 2 years NCD? Or does that count for nothing?
Also can I put a named driver on there if they aren't permanent UK residents (my parents now live abroad) or is that just not allowed?

i think it depends which insurance company you're going with. I know my mum was a named driver on my dads for years then they got 2 cars and she then had the full amount of ncd that my dad had so in effect they both had the same ncd it was a win win as my dad didn't lose out and mum gained. don't know about the abroad bit, just ring a few up and ask their advice0

Thanks. As I've changed insurer yearly, would you think the no claims discount is cumulative? As in effect there have been zero claims at all in 2 years, but that's from different insurers. Furthermore I know my current insurer the AA do give named drivers NCB, but I think that's only meant for use if you then take out a direct policy with them.0

Hi, you say that you are a named driver on a ' family car ' , if so who is the policy holder/main driver? . IF it was your mothers or fathers policy and they are living abroad then you are effectively 'fronting'. You are claiming to be a named driver but are actually the main driver. If you intend to get a policy in your own right and change insurers how do you propose to provide them with the proof of NCB they will require?.0

Who is your current insurance policy? Some insurers offer named drivers the ability to start accumulating their own NCD, but it can't be transfered to other insurers.
Direct Line, for example, will allow you to build a NCD as a named driver...but it is only valid if you take out a policy with Direct Line. If you decided to renew with Axa you will have no NCD.
The point Keith made about 'fronting' is an important one and needs to be addressed if this is indeed the case.
As with the non-UK residents, I believe some insurers allow it..but you would have to check.0 -
Myself and my husband had our policy with budget insurance . My husband was the policy holder and main user .
When our situation changed and i needed to be changed to the main driver and policy holder , budget allowed my husband to sign his NCD over to me . This gave me 7 years of NCD even though i had never held insurance in my own right.
A very short time after signing the NCD over to me i changed insurance Companies and was able to take the full 7 years with me !0 -

There are different rules for spouses and children. Particularly when the 'child' is only 23 (high risk in insurance terms).0 -

Surely they are the main drivers, as I barely driver 900 miles a year whilst they drive 1500+?0 -
Because the Insurers will not be able to prove who is the main driver from milleage records, they will go by who has the most access to the car. Because you live here and your parents are abroad, the Insurers will consider that you are the main driver.
You need to get the car and Insurance registered in your name. If the NCD is not registered in your name, as you are not the policyholder, and they won't transfer it from your dad/mum, then you will be starting from scratch.
If you told your Insurers of the current circumstances, that the policyholder lives abroad and has done for awhile, they won't be very happy, if this information was not disclosed previously. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0
