Advice on which sealy bed to buy please?

Hi

I am reaching 60 in a few weeks and have decided that now is the time to get a new bed!! The problem is that I feel blinded by technology.

I have had a Sealy bed for over 14 years and it has served me well so I think that I'll stick with them. I also have had 2 lots of back surgery and am overweight, although I am trying to lose some.

I have been looking on the Tesco website as there is a promotion for 5000 extra points and, with the double points offer, it would give me a handy £240 back in deals. However, I phoned Sealy and was told that the composition of the mattress is slightly different for Tesco to the ones shown on the Sealy website but they weren't able to give details.

The choices are the
Silver Posturepedic Dream
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.205-7161.aspx
Gold Posturepedic Dream
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.205-3136.aspx
Gold Dream Supreme
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.207-9161.aspx
Purity Pocket Ortho Divan
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.207-0517.aspx

The last is supposed to be for people of above average weight.

I am not looking at the orthopaedic options as I find a really firm bed uncomfortable and they now suggest that people with back problems should opt for a Medium Firm bed.

Thanks

Many people on MSE know my views on Sealy and the rest of the Silentnight group, and that they aren't what they used to be 14 years ago, when they had a very good name.

However if you really do have to go for a Sealy, and I can understand why you want to buy from Tescos, then go for a pocket sprung one, and avoid the Posturetech spring system. This is a continuous spring system (the same a Miracoil as sold by Silentnight). Many manufacturers used to use this spring system, but stopped due t reliability and noise problems. So go for a pocket sprung one between 1000 and 1800 pocket springs.

Thanks for your replies. I would consider other beds but don't know much about them. The Sealy beds seem to incorporate latex in the mattress but I don't really like memory foam as I get so hot.

I sleep with a pillow either side to stop me rolling over as I have problems with my cervical spine and these make me hot enough as it is like being in a sleeping bag!

The Sealy ortho pocket contains 1400 springs.

As I said I tried to find out why the mattresses are different to the ones on the Sealy website so can anyone throw a light on this?

    Many Thanks

Sealy like many other brands usually only use a thin layer of latex, and I'm not sure if this is the case in all their mattresses, but in most it isn't natural latex it is a blend. Also it isn't always covering the whole sleeping surface, but is just in certain areas.

You can find two different mattresses, at very different prices, even made by the same manufacturer. The difference is the amount, and the quality of the fillings used.

I'm afraid I'm not allowed to actually recommend any as I'm in the trade.

I am also in the trade and have no issue recommending a particular product. The Sealy Gold collection is pocket sprung with latex and is a lovely quality product, however for similar money on some bed websites you would be able to get Millbrook or even Hypnos beds for a similar price. If you are buying through Tesco, though, I'd go for something from the Gold collection at the highest you can afford. The reason the spec isn't the same is so that bigger retailers can ignore requests for price matches on products that may sound the same but due to some small difference ar not. I wouldn't worry too much, though, as both Sealy and Tesco are huge companies with massive emphasis on customer service so you will still get an excellent product at what looks like a great price!

Actually you are breaking forum rules by recommending products that you sell.

You really need to learn about what is inside mattresses. The Gold Collection contains the Posture Tech spring systems, which is a continuous spring system. This is just a variation on open coil sprung, and is nothing like pocket sprung.

You neglect to mention the other reason why many big retailers specs differ from the general spec. They are often made to a slightly lower spec to lower costs. Tescos actually do this with many products (as I'm sure other stores do). Just try buying a tin of Dulux paint from a DIY store, and then by the same from Tescos. You will notice that the paint in Tescos is about half a thick as that in the DIY stores. And guess what, they only sell it a couple of pounds cheaper.
  • I know you said Tesco so this may not be much help, but if I wanted a bed I'd go to John Lewis and ask for advice. Sometimes, they have good deals on Vi-spring and even if not you can try out all the beds and see what they're like.
  • I have a tesco catalogue my mum left over mine so i could look at beds and all that. But damn the prices and quality sucks, seen far nicer beds for far cheaper online. Only my opinion while i been on the hunt for my own bed im trying to get. Still bloody hard to find a good bed but im getting there. Gluck with urs.

I'm sorry Tim but you are wrong! The Gold collection does contain a 1400 spring latex mattress. Perhaps you should check your facts?

Only two nights ago I had someone call me who wants to change his sealy gold mattress because he said it is terrible.

    From the Sealy web site:
"The Sealy Gold Collection Posturepedic range designed to eliminate the uncomfortable conditions of tossing and turning during sleep. The Gold Collection provides perfectly balanced sleeping solutions for young and old alike.
Responding to body weight and pressure points, each of the mattresses in this range incorporates 7 zones of latex and memory foam to eliminate tossing and turning and so aid restful sleep. Combined with our patented Posture Tech 660 spring system that ensures an even weight distribution for the sleeper.
The unique Sealy edge guard provides total edge to edge support and all the mattresses are covered with Tencel, a beautifully soft fabric that is eco-friendly and helps keep you cool and dry."
