Question About Barclays Pinsenrty & Account Access

I have resisted the need to get pinsentry but feel that I may have to for text alerts etc but I don't want to have to use it to transfer money or pay existing payees.

Can this be done without using pinsentry?

I'm sure when pinsentry was first launched, logging in without it only gave you read only access but you could request for this to be changed.

What I want is to make the login portal NOT require me to use the PINSentry. I want to have full functionality by logging in the old way, except I will need the PINSentry to pay a payee for the first time.

I don't want to use the PINSentry to pay standard payees nor to pay non-standard payees who I have paid before.

Thx,

Russ

I pretty certain that once you have a pinsentry it has to be used at login to give you full access. Have you asked Barclays?
  • I haven't asked Barclays yet, I was checking my balance early this morning & was curious.
  • If you change from traditional to PINsentry online banking then you will need to log in with the card reader each time you want to make a 3rd party transfer or bill payment.
  • But can I log in & pay existing payees without pinsentry?

No, you can't make any payments using Basic Access.
  • OK, cheers for the answers.

Is there still a way of getting it changed so you can or was that scrapped?

There never was a way of getting it changed. Since the introduction of PINsentry, you have always needed to log in with the card reader to make a 3rd party payment/bill payment. Also, the first time a 3rd party transfer (but not bill payments) is made the card reader needs to be used again to set it up. If you setup Basic Access then you can view your accounts without using the card reader, but can not see any of your direct debits or standing orders, nor can you make 3rd party transfers.

If you're using the traditional membership, as you are, you can make any 3rd party payments that were in place before the introduction of PINsentry AND payments that have been setup by Telephone Banking. This latter option might be for you if you don't want to use PINsentry.
  • Thanks for taking the time to answer. It's a pain as I can't set up a non-standard payee without it but don't want it or need it either!

Why don't you ring up Telephone Banking when you need make a new payment? The beneficiary's details will then be saved on your online banking. Anyway, the actual card reader isn't too bad, although I may have a biased view ;)
