I am after a cheapish runabout to get me to work and back, i do about 60-100 miles a day, i used to have a mondeo ghia diesel which was a workhorse, and didnt give me any problems at all, although was a bit lumpy on the tax, now i am looking at a focus diesel, i have about 1k-2k to spend, are thare many gotchas to look out for, looking at the moment, there seems to be plenty to choose from some with the minus of having high miles, but with the plus that they have already had a cambelt and clutch change and fuel pump done, which seems a common fault on some of these motors.

  • sorry mate havn't a clue about the focus.why not vw passat i would of thought it would be better than a ford?
  • I've had both a Focus diesel and Mondeo diesel and the Mondeo is easily the better car, in my experience. I don't find the tax to be that much higher to be honest, £150 a year I paid last time, maybe I am going to get a shock this year.

Cambelt on the tddi is easy peasy, have heard a few problems regarding the tdci models, why not go for a newer mondy, my 130tdci has tax at £150 pa last year but it went up to I think £160 a year, can't remember as I only did it for / months at a cost of £85:25.

They are both good workhorses, my Focus was an ex minicab with 260k in 6 yrs, and I bought it to carry building materials.

Though I haven't for much time for VW's, very overpriced, get a Skoda Octavia or the previous model Seat Toledo, the saloon from '99 till '05 roughly, very underated and even has an Audi A3 dashboard in it, an underated car. Did 150k in 18 months in one.
