Any advice on ticket name change???

Hi When BA had the amazing sale on i got 2 tickets to NY for just less than £300. I had my name on one and my brothers on another as a special present for his birthday but unfortunately he is unable to go due to work committments and my bf has agreed to come instead.

However i called BA cs to explain but they said that they cannot change the name and that we would need to buy another ticket??? It just seems Bizarre to me especially as i booked them on the net that they couldnt change the name.

Is there anything i can do?

Any advice appreciated.

  • Nothing really you can do about it, except throw the ticket away and buy your bf a new one.

Rules of the ticket clearly stated no name changes.

You may be able to get your Government departure taxes back but that's down to the Ts&Cs for BA.

    No

This is how they make money in this very competitive flight deal climate.

Have you read your insurance policy to see if you can claim?

  • Oh no i thought as much.

Well they did agree to refund the taxes and charges but we will definately end up paying more.

We are going to go down to the airport today and explain in person and see what they can do there.

    Thanks.

Actively pursue the taxes & charges, as that will account for £100 - £130 of your ticket.

However, I'm sorry to say that BA will not help you 1 iota with changing the name on the ticket.

I'd keep an eye out on flight prices for your bf on the same flight, and consider booking asap otherwise you could spend a lot more money than you want on his flight if you leave it too late.
  • Good luck at the airport, I hope it's not too far away because you will be wasting your time. To change an exisiting booking you need to call their booking centre.

If BA are refunding the taxes and fuel supplements you'll only be down £20 - I know the cost the of replacement will be a lot more than you originally paid though.
  • Thanks everyone, just been to the airport and NO joy.

They will refund taxes and charges which is about £100 But the price they quoted on another ticket was £360!

A total nightmare so now we are looking for other cheaper flights on the same date.

Can anyone advise on an airline?

    Thanks

    London - New York direct

Do check that BA flight on their own website in case it's cheaper than what the agent quotes.

BA, Virgin, Continental, American Airlines, United Airlines.

And also... Kuwaiti Airlines & Air India (at least they used to). Not sure what days they fly (maybe not everyday), but sometimes can be very cheap.

And Air India does the best airline food ever!
  • Let us know your dates..or check

Cheapest option may be in-direct with a european carrier - especially as you're limited to the number of direct flights from Manchester (BA and Continental to name two).
  • Thankyou Burtie/Sambee

departing 26th oct 13.40 from London Heathrow
returning 31st oct 19.01 from JFK

Ideally we would like to be on the same BA flight, i will check the net too.

    Thanks.
  • I think you'll find that you bought a completely non-flexible ticket. In other words, the tickets are for each person named, to fly to that destination, on that particular flight, on that particular day. There is no option to change anything - that's why they say "they cannot change the name". Of course, it's possible to do so - but the ticket you bought excluded all changes.

For this reason, if that person doesn't travel on that ticket, you might just as well chuck it in the bin (except for reclaiming the taxes & charges).

It's not that BA are being unhelpful - it's more to do with the type of ticket you bought :(
