Car Insurance cancellation fee reclaim help???

I took out insurance with swift cover for my second car. After 2 weeks they sent me an email saying my No claims discount (NCD) was invalid as it is currently in use on my first car with direct line. (this is fair enough, i did realize you could not do this but do now)

They gave me 2 options
1. continue my policy with no NCD doubling the cost of my premium (to over £1000)

2. Moving my first car to swift cover and they would 'mirror' the NCD on both cars however i could not insure anyone under age of 25.

My daughter is 24 and needs to be a named driver. I rung direct line they offered a better deal and i insured both cars with them instead.

The problem comes now that i need to cancel my swift cover policy. They have sent several emails over the last 2 weeks stating that policy is not valid until the NCD issue is sorted. I have been forced to not take out the swift cover policy as it does not fulfill requirements and is now completely overpriced. I had to pay £85 up front with swift cover. Now i have said i cannot have this policy they are charging me £52 cancellation fee (or though i am not technically canceling, i just cannot legally have the policy i was quoted for). In total i am entitled to a £9 refund for 2 weeks car use.

I would just like to know if they can legally charge me a £52 cancellation fee when as i said i can not legally meet the requirements of the original policy. I understand admin fee but £52 really????

  • I have just found out that if i cancelled in 14 days i would only have to pay £25. I have had the policy for 16 days (inclusive). Can anyone tell me if i canfight this???

    Terms and Conditions.

It'll be in there, so it's your fault, so you need to pay.

I would ask them to show some goodwill and accept the £25 if I was you, speak to them in person instead of emails, and ask to speak to someone in charge if the person you speak to first can't help.

You never know it may help, if you keep it civil they may bend the rules for you.

It's the truth, and is more or less what the insurer will say, so yes....

But the OP has taken their business elswhere. Hardly worth offering any goodwill now.

The Insurers will be basing the cancellation charge on the premium without any no claims bonus, which would in effect more than triple the original premium for someone who had stated they had maximum no claims bonus.

Well if you don't ask you don't get, I have found that a lot companies will offer goodwill even if leaving them.

You don't know what they will say until asked, I cancelled a policy 2 months after taking it out and after some argument (being nice doesn't always work) they agreed to pro rata instead of asking for almost 70% of the whole policy
