Can anyone help? (17 year old with two jobs)

Hi,
I know this has probably been covered loads of times before but couldn't find it so had to start a new thread.

Was looking for some help, been looking into tax and it totally confuses me.

I'm about to start a new temp job, which will last until December, and the hourly rate is £6.50. Also, I have another job which is only 2 hours a week but is with the local council and is £10.50 per hour.

I'm 17 and not in any education anymore.

Can someone explain what I should be paying and also, if I was to move into my own rented flat, what the situation with Council tax would be due to my age?

Thanks in advanced, sorry to be a nuisance.

Tax wise, do you get payslips and such with your jobs? If so, what are the tax codes on both. They should be different.

If you were to get your own place you would have to pay 100% of council tax. You may get some "low income" benefits, but that would be it. And I am not sure how much you would get. Stay at home, save some money, get a fulltime job, then move out.

As you won't have a P45 (a form you get from your employer when you leave a job to pass on to your new employer) you will need to ask your new employer to fill out a P46 so that the HMRC can tell your new employer what tax code to place you on. You'll need to tick the box on the P46 form to say that it is a second job.

Alternatively, if you don't fill out a P46 you are likely to get taxed at Basic Rate and will need to claim back the overpayment of tax at the end of the financial year.

I don't know enough about CT to help you though I don't think you can be responsible for the bill if you're under 18. Direct.gov.uk

You are allowed to earn £6475 per year across both jobs (or more if you get them) before paying tax and £110 per week before you start paying national insurance. After those points you will pay tax at 20% and NI at 11%. They are calculated differently with tax being treated cumulatively over a year, wereas NI is worked out on a weekly basis - what this means in practice is if you only work one week in the year and earn £1000 in that week, you'd pay no tax but NI on £890. As you haven't said how many hours you will do in your main job I can't give you exact figures.

If you look on entitledto.com that will help you with council tax and housing benefit entitlements (which are beyond most peoples comprehension!)

    Thanks guys!

Would be working 9-5 Mon to Fri in the new job.

If I was to tick the second job bit like someone said, would it be ok since this was a full time job and the other in only a 2 hour a week thing.

When you do this, it will mean your tax allowance (the £6475) will go onto the first job. Which as you are only doing 2 hours, makes it pointless (as you of course won't be earning that much!).

However, you can ring up HMRC Tax Office and ask for your tax code to be switched between jobs. But as this is only a temp job you might not be bothered as it might take 2 months to happen anyway. Personally, I would leave it, and then claim back the overpaid tax in April. But if you need the money earlier, it might be worthwhile phoning up.

    Thanks for the help!

SO basically I will pay no tax on the temp? And if I was to get it changed, would it still be charged on my temp job until it was changed, which I would then have to claim back anyway?

The bit in bold is correct!

You will pay tax on the temp job at first because its your second job. And all your allowance goes onto your first job. SO as your allowance is on your first job, you don't have one on your second. IYSWIM.
