need help with BT Freestyle 7250 phone please

I have one handset of the Freestyle 7250 phone. Normally the handset's screen displays the time and date. If there is a message, it displays 'handset 1' and a little red light flashes. Once you have listened to (or deleted) the message, the time/date is supposed to re-appear. Lately this isn't happening ie despite there being no messages on the answerphone, the phone will not reset and just shows 'handset 1' and the phone symbol.
There's nothing in the manual about this and my email to BT tech support has gone unanswered. Can anyone help me reset it please? I've tried everything I can think of from the menu with no joy. I don't fancy ringing an 0870 no at BT and getting someone in India who doesn't understand what I'm on about!
