Reducing phone costs

Hi can anyone help as I'm completely confused. We are in severe debt crisis and with help from cccs are now writing to our creditors. However we also need to reduce outgoings.

We currently have our phone and broadband with Virgin Media and another line for a fax machine, this is necessary because my partner is self employed and running a part internet based business

Are current costs with Virgin are

Line rental 11.99
Line rental 11.99
Broadband 20.50
call charges 31.78

we know we can address the call charges by just not making phone calls where possible, but can anyone give me an easy to understand is there a cheaper operator for the lines and broadband

thank you for any help

  • If your not in contract with Virgin then just cancel the line and have a bt line that is seperate to the fax then i would recommend post office phone and o2 broadband which would be around £18 a month plus calls which you could use voip etc for.

As you have found out, Virgin is the country's most expensive voice telephony provider for non-inclusive calls.

However, the Phone Co-op's Caller Plus tariff is available via cable lines:

    http://www.thephone.coop/residential/call-costs (scroll down)

You dial an 0800 (freephone) number from your line and then get through to a "second dial tone" when you make the call, which appears on your Phone Co-op bill, not the Virgin bill.

0845 calls are 3.95p/min peak 1p/min evenings and 1p weekends.
0870 calls are 3p/min peak, 2.5p/min evenings and 1.5p/min weekends
0843/4 and 0871/2/3 are at the advertised BT per min rate (ie between 0.5p and 10 per min).

There's no 11p (or is it 12p now?) connection fee and there's a minimum charge of just 1.175p per call - with per second billing (remember that?).

Evenings start at 6pm and end at 8am not the silly 7pm and 7am latest ruse.

There is no subscription fee/monthly charge with the Phone Co-op's Caller Plus tariff.

You would continue to pay line rental to Virgin.

Alternatively, you can normally cut the costs of all your non-inclusive calls on Virgin Media (other than for 0843/4, 0871/2/3 calls) by using 18185 via their 0808 1 703 703 freephone gateway number (see http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
