Advice on London Underground
I'm taking my Mrs to London for the day on 21st September and not being used to the Underground, I wondered which was the best, and cheapest way of purchasing tickets.
We will be going from:
London St Pancras to Buckingham Palace (I think Victoria is the nearest Underground station)
Then from Buckingham Palace to Westminster for a tour of the Houses of Parliament and also a trip on the London Eye.
After the London Eye it will be (I think) a trip on the Underground from Westminster back to St Pancras for the train home to Leicester.
I have done some looking, everywhere I want to go will be in Zone 1. But I don't understand which is the cheapest way of doing this - I've read about Oyster cards, but not having been in London since at least 2004 I am a bit clueless. The way tickets are priced doesn't seem to help visitors who rarely go near the centre of London.
So I would appreciate any advice from regular users of the Underground who know exactly what I need to do. I figured if I need to do something now to book something I may save money.
Thank you in advance.

I was just like you a few months ago.
I was advised by station staff just to get a day ticket, about £5.
there is so much information given to you when your are actually on the tube so i wouldnt be too worried.
And the tube staff are great for information.
Have fun.
There is a 4D theatre just outside the London eye, takes about 4 minutes, but it fabulous, go there before you go on the eye.
Google 241 deals if you are going on the train, great bargains to be had .make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Are on the train into St Pancras from outside the M25 I take it? If so try and add a 1 day zone 1 travelcard to your tickets or get one when you are there.0 -
A zone 1 day ticket is £5.60 ish. This is the same for oyster cards as it is the daily cap. Since you're doing only a few journeys it's not really worth buying an oyster card for a one day trip.
And I think Green Park is slightly nearer to Buckingham Palace than Victoria is.0 -
Green Park is definately closer to Buck Palace, you can get to it from St Pancras by jumping on the Victoria Line (Blue) from Kings Cross tube station which is the right next to St Pancras.
You can walk from Buck Palace to the Houses of Parliament, it's a nice walk0 -

It is easy to get from Green Park Tube to Buck House - you literally walk straight across the park and Buck House is straight infront of you.
You can then either walk through St James' Park (other side of The Mall to Green Park) and come out right near Parliament Square or you can walk down The Mall, right towards Houseguards Parade and then left in to Parliament Square (or across Horseguards in to Whitehall and right in to Parliament Square)
If it is a nice day they are lovely walks
I come in to London from Hertfordshire quite often and always buy a one day Travelcard which includes Tube (& Bus I think) then I don't have to worry about additional tickets.:j Proud Member of Mike's Mob :j0 -
Many thanks for all who replied above.
The tour of the State Rooms is at 1.15 and of Parliament at 4.30. I tried to spread them out as far as I could, 4.30 was the latest time for a tour of Parliament. I suppose if we spend 2 hours or so at the Palace we can easily walk to Parliament. I just didn't want to cut it too fine with the timing.
Your advice is much appreciated for a very rare visitor to the capital.0 -
