Unless she has another child then no, she won't get the child element for tax credits until the child is born.

Your friend can't claim CTC until she has a child (unsuprisingly). When she has given birth, she can apply for CTC and will get an extra £550ish as she has a child under 1 (known as the baby element).

You mean can she claim the baby element per year? Yes, if she continues to have a child aged under 1 every year.

The new baby element stops from April 2011.

Does it? Ooo, thanks. Do you know if it'll be for all claims from the start of the tax year or just for new ones?

I'm not too sure. It was announced in the budget that the new baby element would be scrapped from April 2011.
