Wages paid to wrong account

  • What about the fact that you are thier internal customer and they blatantly are hopeless and don't care when stuff goes wrong?

If someone from another department calls me and says somebody in mind had messed up I don't just fob them off and propose no viable solutions whatsoever. I fail to see the difference.

Anyway we'll agree to dis-agree, its a faceless head office department and if this is a common thing (ie everyone's had the wrong tax deduced) the more people do this the better.
What do you want to achieve? Fix their systems or make sure your OH gets paid? I am assuming your real objective is to make sure your OH is paid.

If you create too much of a stink, you are more likely to get the manager [who gave your OH a cash advance] into trouble than fix the problem. Just take the mild approach this month, get OH paid if you can. If it goes wrong next month, then perhaps try and show them up for idiots. But at least give them a chance to do it on their own.

I agree with DVardysShadow. The manager has probably gone out on a bit of a limb here to get this sorted, and since he has shown willing, it may be unwise to then do something which will cause him to regret getting involved. Your OH isn't going to thank you if she finds her manager alienated from her because he has taken the brunt of a telling off from higher up, and he doesn't like it. It'll be her name on the letter and not yours. If it happens again, fair enough, say what you (or to be more precise, she) want. But she has little to gain in this, you have nothing to gain, and you could both end up loosers if it is taken amiss. It may not be the greatest of companies, it may not be the greatest of jobs - but I would assume that if jobs were ten a penny around your way she would already be in a better one.

Well another month on and its happened again, it is correct to say that the manager went out on a limb and wasn't supposed to pay her in cash. The only reason they let him off is that she was on holiday that particular week.

Anyway there was a brief meeting sometime last month in which someone from the Co-Op spoke to her. That wasn't the point of the meeting just somebody from the payroll people was there and said are you the girl that didn't get paid.

They said the manager shouldn't have paid the money in cash and that they would've had to wait for the funds to be returned before they could pay her. No apology.

I find thier position absurd, THEY paid it into the wrong account so its THIER problem. Now that its happened for a second time, despite reassurances that its sorted, its all the more irritating.

I don't really think putting some kind of grievance in will achieve much, just want the job done right. It wouldn't be unreasonable if they did something, even if it was a bunch of flowers, to say sorry for wasting your day off and now messing your pay up for a second time.

BTW I'm aware other people paid the wrong tax and so forth, but they at least got paid something.

So an update, should anyone be reading, the manager cannot authorize cash again without risking his own job. His boss is coming in Monday to try to sort it, frankly I've no idea what the idiot on the other end of the phone was doing when the manager relayed the CORRECT sort code from my OH's card. One thing is for certain they did not enter it on the system as the funds are not in her account.

I've wrote a letter from her simply listing the facts, which are absurd, and pointing out she is having to sort this out in her own time. I doubt it will achieve anything, but it can be followed up later if it happens yet again.

It makes you wonder what they would do if there was something remotely complicated to sort out.

  • Quite honestly I would be barking mad, I used to do wages manually, nowadays they don't even have to do that, the computer works it all out.
I disagree with previous advice telling you to let it lie, clearly that has meant they have been able to get away with this shoddy carry on again.
The holiday issue would infuriate me too. I would be wanting a letter confirming the correct details and holiday arrangements at the very least.

As above, once I can understand, twice is ridiculous. You need to get your missus to kick of about this and get it sorted!

Fair play to the boss though.
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

I wouldn't let it lie now:

The only reason for letting it lie was that a manager stuck her neck out to do the right thing.

This is now time to investigate whether an employment tribunal is the way to go - or perhaps take it to the small claims court. But first put the employer on 7 days notice to rectify the situation

Hence letter outlining the facts, not from me from her. The thing that keeps bugging me is why is there no procedure in place to put things right? It MUST have happened before! (especially as they appear to be idiots).
