Don't forget that ring finals ("ring mains") serving your sockets only use 1 MCB/RCBO per circuit but 2 cables - it's wired in a ring which starts and ends at the MCB. Your electrician should be able to advise appropriately - talk to him (we don't bite!).

Yes, I did speak to an electrician who gave me the first quote (2nd comes tomorrow) - he identified the 9th circuit so I presume that was after counting each ring main correctly (now that you mention it, that does sound familiar as he was counting circuits).

As well as listening to what the electricians recommend, I like to know (for my own piece of mind) what the other options are so a) I don't sound like a complete idiot and b) I will have some idea if he tries to tell me I need something that I don't.
  • How much space do you have?

I need the width in mm (don't do imperial). I can look up a couple of catalouges and give you some numbers

    Hope this helps
    baldly going on...

There is 325mm between the wall and the gas meter.

I did the same thing last week for £320 (new consumer unit, testing and a bit of fault finding).

We are going back to site next week to fault find more and repair the dodgy wiring found. This will be charged at the usual rate of £37.50 per hour.

The whole job (new consumer unit, fault finding, lifting floor boards etc will probably come in less than you have been quoted)

Be careful what make of consumer unit you get see the WYLEX thread.

nothing to suggest there is a problem now though, and MK are still the worst ones you can get! , i dont advocate the use of any one make in particular just pointing out any make can and do go wrong
