Soundproofing for floors/walls.

I'm shortly to move in to a top floor flat and would like to take any steps possible to soundproof my floor and ajoining walls. I seem to recall a previous thread giving advice on this or web sites for sound proofing firms. Can anyone help with the websites please? Also, has anyone had this kind of work done and if so what was involved and at what cost?
I'm having new carpet fitted as well so is there a certain type of underlay I should look for to reduce the transfer of noise?
Thanks

Hello MEGANJODELLE
I think that your thread will get more views and responses in the 'In my home' board, so I'll move it there for you.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.

I think it depends on the age of your property that you're moving into. I moved into a first floor flat in January that was a brand new build. I am in the middle of three flats.
I've got laminate in my hallway and lounge-diner. When I spoke to the flooring company (I had it fitted rather than doing it myself), I asked them to recommend a sound-proofing underlay for the laminate as I didn't want sound travelling. The people below me insist that they can't hear me as we walk on the flat (I go to great pains not to annoy my neighbours).
However, I know that my underlay has made a difference because the blokey above me spent 6mths with no carpets in his flat. The noise travelling was horrendous... he now has carpets but little (if any) underlay and although the noise has reduced, it's still very apparent when he's stamping around his flat.
I would suggest that you get the best underlay you can afford for your carpets as it's surprising what a difference that alone can make.
I hope your new neighbours are grateful to you for being so thoughtful. Would you like to move in above me, please??!!0 -
Hi indiegirl,
Thanks for your advice. I'll now be looking into the appropriate underlays to support sound proofing in my flat. I would love to live in your block as you sound very considerate. Maybe they could state in the lease that only "nice, considerate" people can move in - if only!!
Thanks again.0
