Is there any value in drying out the seeds inside tomatos that have split and won't be eaten? Can these be planted next year or is it best to buy in seeds for planting?

Hi,
I saved seed from last years tumbling tom tomatoes and have had a wonderful crop.Jan £10 a day £326.75/£3100 -
In my experiace it is almost impossible not to get tomato seed to germinate. I just spread the seeds on a bit of paper kitchen towell to dry and keep them in a small jar untill next year, then just put them in compost still on the paper and cover with a little compost, they all germinate so best to spread them thinly.
The only slight problem you may have is that the tomatoes that grow are not always exactly the same as the ones the seed came from, especially if the seed was F1 hybrid.0 -
1. Tomatoes will germinate from just about any different way they are saved.Orange_King wrote: »Is there any value in drying out the seeds inside tomatos that have split and won't be eaten? Can these be planted next year or is it best to buy in seeds for planting?
2. As Chris says, do you want to save this particular variety? If it's F1 it won't come true.
3. If you do. Do you want to save this particular plants genes? If they have split, why have they split? some plants have thinner skins that split more easily. You generally save seeds from your best tomato, on your best plant. All you have to do is scoop out a few seeds onto kitchen paper when you are eating a very ripe one, that ripened on the plant.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
