apparently, unis have lost their focus and should be concentrating on teaching.... and there was me thinking that historically, their emphasis was always on research!
why make government funding all about things like the RAE and then complain that it's unis who have made the decision to emphasise research!
(isn't it time that ministers for science actually had some background in science???)
time for those who want research careers to move abroad......?

What exactly are universities supposed to be teaching when there is no research underpinning it? Who will write the books that students learn from? Universities have always been research institutions foremost, not glorified schools or factories for producing units that employers can deploy in the workforce. Every time Willets opens his mouth he demonstrates that he has no idea what universities do. It's not going to be long before there are no world-class universities left in this country.3-6 Month Emergency Fund #14: £9000 / £10,0000

Exactly. The new REF system is even worse, from what I know of it. Higher education is getting into more and more of a mess.time for those who want research careers to move abroad......?
If only it was that easy. It probably depends on the subject and the area though.
Part of the fun of a university education is that you are being taught about cutting-edge research, or as cutting-edge as it can be.0 -
It was much better when we had universities whose purpose was research and polys whose function was to teach.
What a mess we've made of our HE system, all in the name of egalitarianism,.0 -
Basically is trying to says the cuts are because uni are doing work they shouldn't be doing. When really its just because they want to do cuts.
Conservatives just don't understand how economies work and prove it again and again with there cuts. 3 million unemployed 500,000 vacancies do the maths. Research is the back bone of industry industry is the backbone of a strong economy not stupid unstable service industries. That work on bets, frauds and scams.0
