Setting up a webcam

How simple is it to set a web-cam at my property and through the wi-fi be able monitor it while abroad......like these street-cams you see.
OK so essentially it is the same principle as skype etc but would need someone there to switch it on, I prefer to have it transmitting full time.
Presumably I would need some kind of web-page host, anyone got any experience?

  • Not the cheapest option - but not necessarily terribly expensive - would be an IP webcam. These connect direct to your router either wifi or ethernet cable (so you don't have to have a computer on all the time). They have an inbuilt webserver so you can connect to them using your web browser, or they can email or FTP images periodically to you or to a webhost. Many have inbuilt motion detection so they only respond to movement and can email clips to you. Some manufacturers have their own webcam hosting services if you do want to stream your webcam to the public.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

In built motion detection only really works on the most expensive cameras, the cheaper ones just use change in brightness and triggers the e-mail or upload to ftp server, on a stormy day with bright periods you would get lots of false triggering.

You just need to have your router and camera on, no pc, with some easy settings in your router, you can then access it from anywhere in the world using your web browser.
  • There are alot of korean stuff that are running for less than £50 pretty basic but its generally plug into router stick in plug access ip address and off you go.
