Child Tax Credit Help

My son was 18 and finished his A levels in June.

I contacted both child benefit and child tax credit and they said my benefit would stop on the 5th september unless i contacted them to say he was going to college but if he was going to university i didnt need to do anything as it would automatically stop.

Well as expected my money was paid last friday by child tax credit but NOT by child benefit. I gave up trying to phone as it is permanently busy. Though i would just let the £20 missed payment go as it was going to cost me that in phone calls.

I am now leaving for 6 months in spain while son leaves for university on 28th september but after checking my bank account today Child tax credit have once again paid me.

What do i do as i cannot get through to there helpline at all, i tried all last week to chnge my address due to paying back an overpayment and still no joy

Any helpwould be appreciated as i leave on tuesday

thanks

    Try phoning this number 0845 300 3600
    *SIGH*
    :D
  • I too had that problem, phoned the number and got through in a second. :j
  • So did I - what a relief after literally weeks of phoning!
  • Hi
There is another number floating around on the forums somewhere that people have used when all ordinary lines are busy. My suggestion would be to keep all of the money that tax credits are paying you until you can contact them....that way you can just pay back what you have saved. I have seen this alot on these forums and most people haven't thought to save the money they are being overpaid, and then complaining cos they have a big overpayment bill:o
  • thats the number i had been trying but nothing - after ages on hold i got please call back at alater time

Does anyone know is it different after 18 or should they have stopped as i cannot find anything on their site
