strange email re: Paypal- advice wanted

Options
Hiya

I returned from my hols yesterday and checked my emails to find one email saying that I had been charged $474.99 for a nokia phone. ( I haven't bought a phone) then it goes on to say if I wish to dispute this transaction to click on "dispute transaction" and I will get a full refund.

What I want to know is " is there a scam?" My OH signed up for Ebay but we have never done anything with it.

Has anyone else had this? I don't even know who to contact from ebay to query with them.

Please help I am really scared I now owe $475 for something I don't own!!!!

  • Had one the other day. It's a scam. Don't click on any links but log onto ebay by typing it i the address bar and it will show you you haven't bid on anything.

Think mine was for a watch! The funniest thing was the spelling was [STRIKE]atrocio[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]atrocus[/STRIKE] terrible! :p

if you ever get anything from paypal that your not sure of
forward it on to spoof@paypal.com they will eail you back
to let you know if its genuine or not.

Same with ebay any that your unsure of forward to
    spoof@ebay.com or spoof@ebay.co.uk
again they will email back to let you know if its a
    fake one.

Like the others have said this is a classic phish mail, you can even get them when you don't have a paypal account. They are akin to the Chase Manhattan phishes, that tell you there is a payment going through and if you click on the link you can view it.

another easy way to check is to put a false email address and password when logging in on the link and if it lets you in, it is a phish - but the best way is to completely ignore them and as suggested, login the usuall way to your account to check for any changes or charges.
Most of all - please report them, they get closed down immediately which means less people are conned.
  • Genuine paypal emails will state your proper name on them e.g. Dear Susan Smith etc etc not dear paypal customer or whatever. Never ever click on any links from ebay or paypal even if they seem genuine. Check your account by logging in the normal way. Just to play safe, when you do log in, make sure your email programme is closed-i'm not sure if this is necessary but its a precaution I take just to be safe.

  • I've had three recent e-mails from "Paypal" all addressed to me by name. They have been confirmed as fakes, I posted one of them in the eBay section.
    So beware!

I got one yesterday from paypal which I noticed on an offical PayPal email the email address is spelt "PayPal" but the spoof ones tend to be spelt "paypal".I`ve had quite a few of them and usually forward them on to Paypal to let them know.

    These are really common now.
